Artist Statement

There is music all around us: rhythm in the ripples on a mountain lake, harmony in the shaded forests and illuminated hillsides. As an acrylic painter, I capture on canvas the melodies that I’ve witnessed on my travels. I paint to preserve the feelings of being there, surrounded by the sights, sounds, and smells of the wild. My paintings bring some of that life and vibrancy of Creation indoors. They are warm and welcoming, inviting those who view my work to step into the moment, share my experiences, and relive their own nostalgic memories.

The multitude of moods and dynamic lighting found in nature provide endless inspiration for my creations. I am most drawn toward mountains and trees, and feel the most at home painting forests and rocky peaks. Gathering reference materials aids me in recalling my experiences; I am always photographing, sketching, and capturing video. These references can be used as guides later when starting a new canvas, along with the knowledge gained over years of studying and painting nature. I am not afraid to make changes that will evoke a different emotion or strengthen the composition. My paintings have a strong sense of truth, without the tiny brushes. It is the light and atmosphere in my work that make it authentic.
